Insurance

What to consider before arranging car, van or commercial vehicle insurance.

Arrange cover before delivery

Insurance needs to be in place before a vehicle is driven or delivered. If you are financing or leasing the vehicle, the funder may also have specific requirements around who is insured, the registered keeper and the level of cover.

  • Get quotes before committing so there are no cost surprises.
  • Confirm the registration, vehicle value and use class are correct.
  • Check whether comprehensive cover is required by the finance provider.
  • Make sure the start date lines up with delivery or collection.

Private, business and commercial use

The right policy depends on how the vehicle is used. A car used for commuting, a van used by a tradesperson and a vehicle used by multiple employees can all need different cover. Being accurate at quote stage helps avoid problems if you ever need to claim.

  • Tell the insurer if the vehicle is used for work, deliveries or carrying tools.
  • Check whether employees, named drivers or any-driver policies are needed.
  • Declare modifications, racking, signage, tow bars and conversions.
  • Consider goods in transit, tools in van and public liability where relevant.

Vans carry different risks

Commercial vehicles often carry tools, cargo or business equipment. Theft, downtime and replacement vehicle access can affect your livelihood, so the cheapest policy is not always the best fit.

  • Check overnight parking requirements and security conditions.
  • Confirm whether tools are covered in the vehicle overnight.
  • Ask about courtesy vans, not just courtesy cars.
  • Review excess levels and exclusions carefully.
